Born and raised in the Austrian Alps, Markus started snowboarding in 1993. After a few years as a competitive athlete, he realized that I wasn't the competitive type and his focus shifted more and more to freeriding and exploring the backcountry. 30 years later he still enjoys spending time in the mountains spitboarding and riding at the resort. After several years as a trainer for the Austrian Snow Sports Association, he set out on his own and opened his own snowboard and guiding school. Markus says, "The main reason why I fell in love with splitboarding is the peace and quiet you feel in the mountains and the fact that you can only get to the best runs where there is no lift, using your own strength and knowledge."
